“Shifting Ink”

2010.04 “By other means”

2010.09 “Shifting Ink”

두 번째 작업은 스테판 니콜라에브(Stefan Nikolaev)의 <Minouk le Poisson Peintre (The Painting Fish)>(1994-2004) 이다.

Following the art video screening program ‘By other means’ curated by November Paynter for the auditorium at Artsonje, she has now selected two works to be presented in the lounge area.

The first video work is by Alexander Ugay. Titled Waltz (2009), the piece is an animation composed from the illustrations taken out of a book on self defence that seen chronologically form a gentle, waltz-like, fight sequence. By agitating the original ink-drawn character positions the work exaggerates the potential for the viewer to become a strong and courageous man during a short period of time. Ugay says that for him ‘the drawings look like a fresco of ancient myth that tell a tale of a great exploit and that the movements remind him of a magic dance, which strengthens the fighting spirit.’ Such brochures were fairly popular in the beginning of the 90s in post-soviet countries when crime and lawlessness were common. Ugay suggests that at that time ‘people could hope to themselves and imagine a miracle.’ He says ‘I could call this phenomenon - moral karate.’ Ugay’s work is installed in the library/bookshop area, juxtaposing a moment of agitation alongside the static ink drawings and text to allow them to also be re-imagined in a more active form.

The second work is Minouk le poisson peintre(The Painting Fish) (1994-2004) by Stefan Nikolaev. This video is not an animation, but has a similar humorous and bizarre quality. A gold fish swims within the picture frame and ink is added to the water until the poor fish is completely submerged in a sea of red. Again referring back to the library and its ink filled publications the work also responds to the traditional ink and brush art forms found in Korea. Both works have a meditative quality and seem to develop much like a flip book of simple, yet accumulative frames.

- November Paynter

Kudo bridged many disparate artistic tendencies in the latter half of the 20th century- French Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Pop Art - without specifically belonging to or identifying with any of them. While his art and vision were consistently and uniquely transcultural, international, and cosmopolitan, he remained, in his private thinking and public persona, an eternal outsider. Ultimately, what Kudo hoped to discover and develop was a universal humanist language of creativity and regeneration in a post-nuclear world. And that hope still resonates, perhaps even more critically in this new century, almost 20 years after his death. The 304-page catalogue features an overview essay by Doryun Chong, a richly illustrated chronology by the artist’s widow, Hiroko Kudo, and a reflection by artist Mike Kelley. The book, with, 100 color plates and 105 black-and-white illustrations, also includes several of Tetsumi Kudo’s statements, manifestos, and interviews, many of them translated into English for the first time. - Walker Art Center
